At 27 millimeters in diameter and about half an ounce, eagles are essentially large gold coins and contain enough gold to make them popular among bullion investors. This series was commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt and designed by Auguste Saint-Gaudens. This design was extremely popular and remained popular until 1933, when the gold standard was abolished.
