Among Australia's exceptional wildlife, the emu is perhaps second only to the kangaroo as one of Australia's most recognizable species, found across much of the country and featured on the historic coat of arms.
Royal Australian Mint new 2023 The $5 half gram coin, the third in the Mini Money series of collector and investment gold coins, features the majestic Emu.
Almost two meters tall, the flightless Australian emu is smaller only than the African ostrich. Local people ate emu and their eggs. Emus are found throughout Australia, but are less common on the populated east coast.
Their relations with the farmers were not always pleasant and in 1932 wheat farmers in Western Australia needed an army to deal with herds of emus threatening their crops. However, during the "Emu War" there were not many casualties, it served as a deterrent.
Except for disappearances, adult emus have no natural predators, and habitat loss has not had a significant impact on their numbers. Emus are therefore classified as Least Concern.
