The Millennium Celebrations were a global, coordinated series of events to celebrate and commemorate the 1999 the end and the beginning of the year 2000 according to the Gregorian calendar. The holidays were celebrated as the end of the 2nd millennium, the 20th century. and the 200s and the beginning of the 3rd millennium, the 21st century. and the 201st decade (although the starting and ending points of such periods were then is still disputed). Countries around the world held official celebrations in the months leading up to the date, such as the White House Millennium Council in the US, and most major cities held fireworks shows at midnight. In addition, events were held at many private venues, cultural and religious centers, and a variety of commemorative items were produced, including souvenir stamps and coins.

As with every New Year's Eve, many events were scheduled for midnight in the local time zone. There were also many events related to the dawn of January 1. The international telecast of 2000 Today was produced by a consortium of 60 broadcasters, while alternative program Millennium Live was canceled two days before the event.

Several countries in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and thus close to the International Date Line, claimed to be the first to enter the new millennium. The Chatham Islands, New Zealand, Tonga, Fiji and Kiribati have staked claims to the status, moving the date line itself, temporarily establishing daylight saving time and claiming to be the "first land" to enter the new millennium.

The year 2000 problem, also known as the Y2K problem, Y2K panic, millennium bug, Y2K bug, Y2K glitch, Y2K bug, or simply Y2K, referred to potential computer errors in the formatting and storage of calendar data after the year 2000. Many programs denoted four-digit years with only the last two digits, so 2000 could not be separated from 1900 The failure of computer systems to correctly distinguish between dates could have brought down the global infrastructure of computer-based industries.

Critics, however, said that even in countries with very little software fixing due to calendar formatting, the damage was minimal. The same is true for sectors such as schools and small businesses, where compliance with Y2K policies has been faltering at best.
