This coin coin commemorates the 125th Anniversary of the Klondike Gold Rush. The world-famous Klondike Gold Rush (1896-1899) officially began August 16, 1896. On this day, four family members (an American prospector named George Carmack, his Tagish wife Kate Carmack (Shaaw Tláa), her brother Skookum Jim (Keish), and their nephew Dawson Charlie (K̲áa Goox̱)) discovered gold on the banks of Rabbit Creek, now known as Bonanza Creek. While George Carmack was listed as the official discoverer of the gold, it is possible that Skookum Jim found it first but agreed to let George take credit. This is because they all feared that authorities would not recognize an indigenous claimant. After the initial discovery, a stampede of hopeful gold grabbers converged around the Klondike goldfields, estimated at about 100,000 people overall. “Boom Towns” sprung up along the travel routes to accommodate prospectors, and some are still fairly active today. Sadly, the Native Hän people greatly suffered from the rush, as they were forcibly moved into a reserve to make way for the Klondikers. As a result, many indigenous people were permanently displaced and some even died. While the Klondike Gold Rush is indisputably a significant chapter in Canadian history, its legacy remains understandably complex.
