Louis Braille silver dollars were presented on March 26 at the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) ceremony in Baltimore. The U.S. Mint first demonstrated the design of the coin in 2008. July. during the annual NSF convention in Dallas, Texas. Edmund Moy, president of the U.S. Mint, said during the presentation: “For the first time in history, the U.S. has a Braille coin. Louis Braille’s personalized silver dollar is a tribute to the system’s developer, who has played an important role in eradicating illiteracy and strengthening the independence of the blind.
The obverse of the coin depicts the designer of the system, Louis Braille.
The reverse depicts a blind child reading a book. The word "independence" is on the left side of the child's bookshelf.
As Edmund Mojus said, this coin is the first in the U.S. to read Braille. The other three coins are from the Alabama Quarter and the 1995 and 1996 coins. Paralympic coins - there were also Braille characters, but they were too small to read.
