The obverse features the laureate bust of King Franz Joseph I encircled by the Hungarian legend with his titles "FERENCZ JOZSEF I K A CS ES M H S D O AP KIR" (Franz Joseph by the Grace of God Emperor of Austria and Apostolic King of Hungary, Croatia, Slavonia, Dalmatia). Below the bust is the mintmark K.B (for the Kremnica mint).
The reverse has the encircled Hungarian royal arms with the denomination in French Francs (20 Francs) to the left and Hungarian Forint (8 Forints) to the right. Surrounding this is the Hungarian legend MAGYAR KIRALYSAG (Hungarian Kingdom) and the date.

Franz Joseph I (1830-1916) became Emperor of Austria in 1848 and Emperor of Austria- Hungary since 1867. His 68-year reign is the third-longest in the recorded history of Europe.
