The 7.5-ruble denomination is one of the more unusual gold denominations of Imperial Russia. It appeared during the monetary reform associated with Finance Minister Sergei Witte, when the Russian ruble was placed firmly on the gold standard. The coin is also notable for its edge inscription, which states the precise quantity of pure gold using the traditional Russian units zolotnik and dolya.
