The physical collector LBCOIN coin is made of silver and has a nominal value of 19.18 EUR. It was minted by UAB "Monetų kalykla" (Lithuanian Mint). The coin is shaped like a payment card and depicts the Act of Independence of Lithuania alongside its signatories. On the reverse, the Lithuanian tricolor flag features the national anthem written in binary code. The obverse displays the Vytis (coat of arms) incorporated into a Quick Response (QR) code linking to the online store. The coin weighs 36.36 g and features PROOF–LIKE quality. Both the physical collector coin and digital tokens were designed by the artist Giedrius Paulauskis.
LBCOIN is the first central bank–issued digital coin not only in the euro area, but worldwide. The coin attracted immense international attention and helped promote Lithuania's name as an innovative nation.
The Bank of Lithuania created LBCOIN while executing its strategic direction in innovation and financial technology (FinTech). Developing the coin enabled Lithuanian and international companies to gain new knowledge and conduct blockchain technology research by testing and applying blockchain–based services within financial institutions. The issuance of this coin also allowed the Bank of Lithuania to acquire practical experience in the field of digital currency, and the lessons learned from the LBCOIN project are being utilized to explore practical possibilities for a digital euro.
