in 1873 the coinage act did not provide for a silver dollar standard. After the mintage of this dollar stopped, the gold dollar became the unit coin, and the barter dollar was used for commercial transactions with Eastern countries. Silver dollar coinage resumed since 1878. February 28; by a law known as the Bland-Allison Act. The weight of these silver dollars - 412.5 grains, purity - 0.900 should correspond to 1837. January 18 the law.
 
George T. Morgan, a former student of William Wyon at the Royal Mint in London, designed the new dollar. His initial M is found at the end of Libertas neck, near a lock of hair. The initial O is found on the side of the eagle, below the crown. The minting of silver dollar coins ceased after 1904, when demand for them fell sharply and the supply of the bullion dried up. According to the 1918 270,232,722 silver dollars were melted down under the provisions of the Pittman Act, and mintage resumed in 1921.
