Despite ancient myths and legends, goddesses shape our modern lives more than we realize. Their stories of family dramas, great dynastic wars, love found and lost, the worlds of nature and magic, and the realms of gods and men are the moral codes that inspire our modern imaginations and lifestyles.

The main character in the story of Cybele's relationship with the natural world is Attis, the Phrygian god of vegetation, fertility and rebirth. Cybele fell in love with Atis and made him promise never to leave her. However, the youthful Atis did not take his promise too seriously and soon fell in love with the princess, who asked him to marry her.

Cybele, overcome with jealousy, disrupted the wedding, and Atis, fearing for his life and the safety of his wife, fled to hide in the mountains. Here, wracked with guilt over his mistakes, he slowly went insane until he castrated himself and killed himself.

When Cybele discovered the cold body of Achis lying at the foot of a large pine tree, she was filled with sadness and remorse for what she had done. She visited the mighty Zeus and begged him not to let Achis die so that his youth and beauty would be preserved. As a result, new violets grew around the pine tree, establishing Atis as the god of agriculture and new life.
