An adult marten (or wood marten), a member of the Mustelidae family, which includes weasels, wolverines, and skunks, is about the size of a house cat, but with a slender body and shorter legs. The Newfoundland marten subspecies is found only in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
The marten depicted on the coin is already several months old. Having found a suitable hollow in a tree or abandoned den, the mother in March/April. gives birth to two to four offspring. Each newborn weighs only 30 grams, but grows fast! The mother nurses the cubs until the beginning of summer, and the cubs become independent by autumn.
The silky fur of the marten has traditionally been prized in the fur industry, where it is sometimes sold as Canadian sable.
